Retail Margins on Mahjong Sets: Pricing Strategy for Stores and Online Sellers

How to price mahjong sets for real margin — keystone vs premium positioning, accessory attach rates, and the math behind a healthy mahjong category.

The Cost Anchor

Factory-direct complete sets: $50-120. That is your landed-cost anchor before freight. Everything above it is positioning — and the market has demonstrated repeatedly that it accepts $200-400 retail for well-presented sets. Very few categories hand retailers this much pricing room.

Three Working Price Architectures

Keystone-plus (2.5-3x cost): the safe specialty-retail default; a $60 landed set sells at $165-180. Premium positioning (3-4x): invest in presentation photography and gift packaging; this is where boutique brands live. Volume play (1.8-2.2x): for club and event channels where repeat order velocity replaces margin depth. Choose one architecture per channel — do not average them.

The Attach-Rate Multiplier

Mats, bags, pusher upgrades and spare-tile kits carry margins of their own and attach to 30-50% of set sales when merchandised together. A $70 set plus a $22 mat plus a $15 bag often out-earns a $120 set sold alone. Plan your opening order assortment accordingly: sets fund the category, accessories fund the margin.

The Reorder Calendar

Mahjong sells year-round but spikes hard: Mother's Day, graduation, Christmas, and the September "mahjong season" restart. Stock depth in Q3 protects your Q4. Our dealers' consistent pattern: order in August what you think December needs — the category's sell-through history punishes caution, not aggression.
